The Baum-Connes conjecture and the Farrell-Jones conjecture concern the topological \(K\)-theory of group \(C^*\)-algebras and the algebraic \(K\)- and \(L\)-theory of group rings, respectively. Both allow coefficients in a \(C^*\)-algebra or ring with an action of the underlying group. These conjectures have been proved for different classes of groups, using different techniques. One of the strongest results on the Baum-Connes conjecture is the proof by Higson and Kasparov for groups acting properly by affine isometries on a separable Hilbert space. For this class of groups, the article proves the Farrell-Jones conjecture with certain coefficients, namely, a \(C^*\)-algebra that is stable with respect to the compact operators. The algebraic crossed product with such a coefficient ring that appears in the Farrell-Jones conjecture is a dense subalgebra of the \(C^*\)-algebraic crossed product. The main result of the paper is equivalent to the statement that the algebraic \(K\)-theory of this dense subalgebra is isomorphic to the topological \(K\)-theory of the ambient \(C^*\)-algebra. The proof uses the same ideas as the proof by Higson and Kasparov. These must be extended, however, to work beyond the realm of \(C^*\)-algebras. In particular, asymptotic homomorphism techniques are adapted to these dense subalgebras.
