Let \((X,o)\) be a normal complex surface singularity. The (embedded) topological type of \((X,o)\) is determined by its link \(L\) (= intersection of \(X\) with a small sphere with center at \(o\)) or by the dual graph \(\Gamma \) of any good resolution \(p:\widetilde{X}\rightarrow X\) of \((X,o)\) (representing irreducible components of the exceptional divisor \(p^{-1}(o))\). The authors consider all \((X,o)\) with the same link \(L\) (or graph \(\Gamma )\) and ask what are the possible values of the geometric genus \(p_{g}\) of \((X,o)\) -- an analytic invariant of \((X,o)\). They propose upper and lower bounds for \(p_{g}\) and analyse the sharpness of these bounds in many specific cases.
