This is a technical paper with a long list of references. The authors study the singularities of the Szegő kernel and mapping properties of the Szegő projection on abstract CR manifolds with minimal assumptions. In addition to new results, the authors give a summary of earlier results and open problems in this subject. Furthermore, the authors conclude with geometric consequences of these analytic results.
