The authors introduce the notion of asymptotic self-similar set on a general doubling metric space. For this new class of sets, the Hausdorff dimensions of its members are determined extending previous results by \textit{Z. M. Balogh} and \textit{H. Rohner} [Ill. J. Math. 51, No. 4, 1275--1297 (2007; Zbl 1163.28001)]. The latter procedure is based on the new notion of almost similarity maps and asymptotic similarity systems. As an application, the Hausdorff dimension of general Sierpiński gaskets on complete surfaces is computed.
