The notions of strongly invariant, strongly inert, fully invariant and fully inert subgroups of abelian groups have been defined and the relations among these notions have been discussed. The properties of strongly invariant subgroups have been mentioned from a strongly inert point of view. In the main section on strongly inert subgroups, the authors prove the following. \begin{itemize} \item[1.] A subgroup $H$ of a free group $G$ is strongly inert if and only if its index $[G:H]$ is finite. \item[2.] Subgroups commensurable with strongly invariant subgroups of fully transitive homogeneous groups of idempotent type are trivially strongly inert. \item[3.] A subgroup $H$ of a torsion group $G$ is strongly inert if and only if its $p$-torsion $H_p$ is strongly inert in the $p$-torsion $G_p$ of $G$ for every prime $p$ and almost all primary components are strongly invariant. \item[4.] A subgroup $H$ of a torsion group $G$ is strongly inert if and only if $H$ is commensurable with a strongly invariant subgroup of $G$. \end{itemize} The authors also mention that the following conjecture is still open though they suspect that this is true. \par If $G$ is a group and $K \subseteq H \subseteq G$ such that $K$ is strongly inert in $G$ and $H/K$ is strongly inert in $G/K$, then $H$ may not be strongly inert in $G$.
