Let \(X\) be a completely regular Hausdorff space, \(\beta X\) its Stone-Čech compactification and \((\mathcal{E}, \pi, X)\) a bundle of Banach algebras. Then there exists a canonical bundle \((\mathcal{F}, \rho, \beta X)\) such that the topological linear space \(\Gamma_b(\pi)\) of all bounded sections of \(\pi\) is isometrically \(C(\beta X)\)-isomorphic with the topological linear space \(\Gamma(\rho)\) of all sections of \(\rho\). Let \(\mathcal{D}\) be a cover of \(X\) and denote by \(\Gamma_b(\pi, \mathcal{D})\) the space of all sections of \(\pi\) that are bounded on each element of the cover \(\mathcal{D}\). Suppose that \(\mathcal{D}\) is \(C_b\)-embedded, which means that for every \(D\in\mathcal{D}\) each continuous and bounded map on \(D\) has an extension that is continuous and bounded on the whole space \(X\). Define a bundle \((\mathcal{F}', \rho', \beta_X)\) by taking \(F'_y=F_y\) if \(y\in\beta D\) for some \(D\in\mathcal{D}\) and \(F'_y=\{0\}\) otherwise. Here, \(\rho'\) is the natural projection. As the main result, the authors prove that, under the above conditions, the algebra \(\Gamma_b(\pi, \mathcal{D})\) satisfies spectral synthesis if and only if each fiber of \((\mathcal{F}', \rho', \beta X)\) satisfies spectral synthesis. Reviewer's remarks: The definition of the set \(\mathcal{F}'\) on p. 360 is not correct. The set \(\mathcal{F}'\) should be the disjoint union of fibers \(F'_y\), where \(y\) varies over \(\beta X\). On p. 352, there is also a claim that the space \(\mathcal S\) of all choice functions is a subspace of the space \(\Gamma(\pi)\) all continuous choice functions, which is not true. Perhaps it is supposed that the space \(\mathcal{S}\) should also satisfy the conditions C1)--C5) in order to be a subspace of \(\Gamma(\pi)\).
