The paper is devoted to some qualitative and geometric aspects of planar nonsmooth vector fields (NSVFs). Under hypotheses on the switching manifold and avoiding sliding motion in some sense, the authors extend the Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem for a class of nonsmooth systems. By allowing sliding motion, they show that a version of such theorem can be obtained under some extra hypotheses. Also, in the presence of sliding motion, they exhibit NSVFs having positive Lebesgue measure minimal sets whose trajectories confined on it have a behavior not predicted in the classical theory.
