Over the recent years, fluid flows and heat transfer through porous media have seen an explosive increase in research, and this is evident through the creation of new journals, research books, and international conferences and workshops on this topic. This rapidly increasing research activity has been mainly due to important applications of porous media in many modern industries, for instance heat removal processes in engineering technology, geophysical problems related to thermal insulation, chemical reactors, the underground spread of pollutants, heating of rooms, combustion, and many other heat transfer processes, both natural and artificial. Since 1972, when the present author published the book ``Dynamics of fluid in porous media'', the science of porous media and the understanding of flow and transport phenomena that occur in them have advanced tremendously. The objective of the present book by the same author, one of the world's foremost specialist in porous media, is to present and discuss the construction of mathematical models that describe phenomena of flow and transport in porous media as encountered in many disciplines. The book's contents are as follows: 1. Porous media; 2. Some elements of thermodynamics; 3. Fundamental balance equations and fluxes; 4. Momentum balance and motion equation; 5. Modeling single-phase mass transport; 6. Modeling multiphase mass transport; 7. Modeling transport of chemical species; 8. Modeling energy and mass transport; 9. Poromechanics and deformation. Every chapter ends with a list of references. The book is designed primarily for advanced undergraduate and graduate students interested in porous media, water hydrology, soil mechanics, soil physics, petroleum and chemical engineering. It is highly recommended as well to scientists and engineers already working in these fields, and to university teachers. Systematic and comprehensive, this book satisfies the highest standards of excellence and will undoubtedly become a standard reference book in the field of porous media.
