If \(G\) is a \(p\)-group of order \(p^{n}\) and nilpotence class \(c\), then its coclass is \(n - c\). \textit{J. Carlson} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 200, No. 3, 251--266 (2005; Zbl 1105.20044)] has proved that for a fixed \(m\) the cohomology algebras modulo \(2\) of (finite) \(2\)-groups of class \(m\) fall in finitely many isomorphism classes. Carlson has conjectured that a similar result holds for any prime. There have been several partial result towards proving Carlson's conjecture true. \textit{B. Eick} and \textit{D. J. David} [Isr. J. Math. 206, 183--212 (2015; Zbl 1319.20018)] have shown that there are finitely many Quillen categories for \(p\)-groups of a given coclass. The authors of the paper under review have proved [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 369, No. 9, 6725--6750 (2017; Zbl 1475.20086)] that the conjecture holds for non-twisted \(p\)-group of a given coclass. In the paper under review, the authors study an instance of a problem which is dual to Carlson's conjecture, by showing that for all primes \(p\), the number of isomorphism types of the cohomology algebras modulo \(p\) of \(d\)-generated finite \(p\)-groups of nilpotence class less than \(p\) is bounded by a function of \(p\) and \(d\). Lazard's correspondence plays a key role for such groups of small class, along with results of \textit{T. Weigel} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 352, No. 9, 4143--4154 (2000; Zbl 0971.20031)] and Carlson [loc. cit.].
