Let \(R\) be a commutative ring with identity. The ring \(R\) is \textit{Hopfian} if every epimorphism of \(R\) onto itself is an automorphism. The author proves that an integral domain \(R\) is Hopfian if \(R\) does not contain infinite strictly ascending sequences of prime ideals, and he asks whether the converse is true. He also proves that if \(R\) is a reduced clean ring, then \(R\) is Hopfian. Recall that the ring \(R\) is \textit{clean} if every element of \(R\) is a sum of a unit and an idempotent.
