The authors give a short elementary proof of the following known result. Let \(A\) be a positive self-adjoint operator in a real or complex Hilbert space. Then there exists a unique positive self-adjoint operator \(S\) such that \(S^2 = A\). Furthermore, \(DA \subset AD\) implies that \(DS \subset SD\) for any bounded operator \(D\). The method of the proof is rather algebraic and all tools employed in this paper are elementary operator techniques.
