Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Let $H$ be a closed $k$-subgroup scheme of $G$ such that the homogeneous space $G/H$ is spherical. The author introduces some technical hypoteses on $H$ which allow to deduce some good properties for the normal equivariant embeddings of $G/H$. In particular it is assumed that there exists a closed subgroup scheme $H_a$, containing $H$ and contained in the normalizer $N(H)$, such that $G/H_a$ admits a wonderful compactification which satisfies the so-called Local Structure Theorem. Under these assumptions, the authors proves various results on existence of equivariant rational resolutions by toroidal embeddings, existence of Frobenius splittings compatible with the closed $G$-subvarieties, cohomology vanishing and surjectivity of restriction maps of global sections of line bundles. Furthermore, it is shown that the required assumptions are fulfilled by the symmetric homogeneous spaces in characteristic $p\neq2$ and are stable under parabolic induction.
