The author studies fully nonlinear overdetermined elliptic problems in domains diffeomorphic to closed 2-dimensional disks by employing a technique based on the Poincaré-Hopf index which was originally used by \textit{H. Hopf} [Math. Nachr. 4, 232--249 (1951; Zbl 0042.15703)] to prove a uniqueness theorem for constant mean curvature spheres. The result is applicable to several well-known nonlinear elliptic problems, including the Monge-Ampère equations and prescribing mean curvature.
