A stable variety is a projective semi-log-canonical variety with ample canonical divisor. The coarse moduli space of stable varieties is an algebraic space which is separated and locally of finite type. The paper under review proves the following important result: every closed complete subspace of the coarse moduli space of stable varieties is projective. The main ingredients of the proof are Kollár's projectivity criterion (see [\textit{J. Kollár}, J. Differ. Geom. 32, No. 1, 235--268 (1990; Zbl 0684.14002)]) and some semipositivity theorems (see Theorem 1.7, Theorem 1.10 and Theorem 1.11) which are analogous to the Fujita-Zucker-Kawamata semipositivity theorem (see Theorem 3.7 of [\textit{O. Fujino}, Adv. Lect. Math. 39, 245--282 (2017; Zbl 1379.14013)]). The proof of the semipositivity theorems is based on the previous work by the author and \textit{T. Fujisawa} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 50, No. 4, 589-661 (2014; Zbl 1305.14004)] which heavily uses the theory of variation of mixed Hodge structures.
