Let \(C\) be a general curve of genus \(g\) and \(d, r\) positive integers such that \(\rho (g,d,r):= g -(r+1)(g-d+r)=1\) so that the Brill-Noether locus \(W^r_d(C)\) is a smooth projective curve. The authors gives a new method to compute the genus of the curve \(W^r_d(C)\) ([\textit{G. Pirola}, Ann. Mat. Pura Appl., IV. Ser. 142, 77--90 (1985; Zbl 0596.14009)], [\textit{D. Eisenbud} and \textit{J. Harris}, Invent. Math. 90, 23--88 (1986, Zbl 0631.14023)]; they degenerate \(C\) to a chain of elliptic curves. They discuss the analogy of their method with the tropical proof of Brill-Noether theory, pointing out later generalizations [\textit{M. Chan} et al., Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 370, No. 5, 3405--3439 (2018, Zbl 1380.05007)] and an expansion of this method [\textit{A. López Martín} and \textit{M. Teixidor i Bigas}, Doc. Math. 22, 263--286 (2017; Zbl 1401.14163)].
