The purpose of this paper is to use conformal mappings to study viscous gravity current theory. We start with a nonlinear advection-diffusion equation in the complex \(z\) plane which is conformally transformed to the \(\omega\) plane, with pertinent approximations. Different potential flows are then illustrated by dimensionless conformal mappings. It would have been more didactic to keep SI units and to illustrate these mappings by pictures, or to refer to the standard works on conformal mapping [\textit{Z. Nehari}, Conformal mapping. New York-Toronto- London: McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. (1952; Zbl 0048.31503); \textit{M. R. Spiegel}, Complex variables with an introduction to conformal mapping and its applications including 640 solved problems. Schaum's Outline Series. New York: Schaum Publishing Co (1964; Zbl 0143.10002)]. Corresponding conclusions for flows and streamlines are drawn. Finally, a survey of experiments to verify the formulas, with corresponding digital images, is given.
