In the paper under review, the authors give a classification of the Harish-Chandra modules generated by the pullback to \(\mathrm{SL}_2 ( \mathbb{R})\) of harmonic Maaß forms for congruence subgroups of \(\mathrm{SL}_2 (\mathbb{Z})\) with exponential growth allowed at the cusps. They include vector-valued forms beside integral weight. It is well known that, due to the weak growth condition, these modules do not need to be irreducible. In the paper under review, it is shown that there are nine possibilities and that all of them arise from harmonic Maaß forms by giving explicit examples. The proof is based on some elementary Lie algebra. Furthermore, they discuss the case of forms that are not harmonic but rather are annihilated by a power of the Laplacian. In this case, much more complicated Harish-Chandra modules can arise. The paper is clearly written and indeed, it illustrates in the simplest case the phenomenon of extensions occurring in the space of automorphic forms and it may help to understand harmonic Maaß forms from a representation theoretic perspective as claimed in the paper.
