The authors prove a second main theorem for holomorphic curves. Let \(f:\mathbb C\to\mathbb P^2(\mathbb C)\) be an entire holomorphic curve, and let \(L_1,\ldots,L_q\) be lines in general position in \(\mathbb P^2(\mathbb C)\). We define the cluster set \(\mathrm{Cl}(f)\) by \[ \mathrm{Cl}(f)=\bigcap_{r>0} \overline{f(\mathbb C\setminus D_r)}, \] where \(D_r=\{z\in \mathbb C; |z|<r\}\). We say that \(f\) is asymptotically degenerate if \(\mathrm{Cl}(f)\) is contained in an algebraic curve. Then the main result to the editor paper can be stated as follows. If \(f\) is asymptotically degenerate, then \[ (q-3)T_f(r)\leq \sum_{j=1}^qN_1(r, f^*L_j)+o(T_f(r)) \] outside a set of finite length in \([1, +\infty)\). This gives an improvement of Cartan's second main theorem. We notice that examples of asymptotically degenerate entire holomorphic curves are constructed in [\textit{B. Freitas Paulo da Costa}, Ann. Inst. Fourier 63, No. 6, 2223--2237 (2013; Zbl 1295.30083)].
