Let \(X\) be a metric space equipped with a doubling measure and \(\emptyset \neq E \subset X\) is a closed set. The authors consider weights \(w(x)=\text{dist}(x,E)^{-\alpha}\), where \(\alpha\in{\mathbb R}\). They investigate conditions (based on the lower Assouad codimension \(\underline{\text{co dim}}_A(E)\) of \(E\)) for the inclusion of \(w\) in Muckenhoupt's \(A_p\) classes of weights, \(1\leq p<\infty\). The following theorem is main result concerning the \(A_p\)-properties of distance weights. \(\bullet\) If \(\underline{\text{co dim}}_A(E) > \alpha \geq 0\), then \(w \in A_p, \forall p\in [1,\infty]\). \(\bullet\) If \(\alpha < 0, p\in (1,\infty)\), \(\underline{\text{co dim}}_A(E) > \alpha/(1-p)\), then \(w \in A_p\). \(\bullet\) If \(\underline{\text{co dim}}_A(E) > \max\{0,\alpha\}\), then \(w \in \bigcup_{1\leq p< \infty}A_p\). Sharpness of this results is also proved. With the help of general \(A_p\)-weighted embedding results, the authors prove certain two weight (global) Hardy--Sobolev inequalities and fractional versions of such inequalities in the setting of metric spaces, where the weights are powers of a distance function.
