This paper deals with the study of the exterior Dirichlet problem for the Helmholtz equation. The authors establish \textit{a priori} bounds on the solution with explicit dependence of the constant. This result enables the authors to study the well-posedness of the problem via the unique continuation principle. The resolvent estimate established in this paper implies that the cut-off resolvent has a resonance-free strip beneath the real axis. The paper also contains the relationship with the nontrapping of rays, and why it is expected this condition to arise when using Morawetz's identities.
