The authors study the boundedness of the following linearized maximal operator: let $m\in C^3(\mathbb{R})$ be a compactly supported function, let $L>0$ and let $V:\mathbb{R}^2\rightarrow[L^2,\infty)$ satisfy the Lipschitz condition $|V(z)-V(z')|\le\max(L^2,L|z-z'|)$. Then \[ T_{m,V}f(x,y)=\int\!\!\!\int_{\mathbb{R}^2}m(V(x,y)|\xi\eta|)\widehat{f}(\xi,\eta)e^{2\pi i(x\xi+y\eta)}\,d\xi\,d\eta \] satisfies $\|T_{m,V}f\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R}^2)}\le C(p,m)\|f\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R}^2)}$, for all $ 1 < p < \infty $ and $f\in\mathcal{S}$. A similar result is obtained, for $p=2$, when $m$ is the characteristic function of the unit interval, whenever $V$ further fulfills a suitable lacunary-type condition. The boundedness of the corresponding maximal operator, for the dilated operators with Fourier multiplier $m(t\eta)$, is yet an open question [\textit{H. Dappa} and \textit{W. Trebels}, Ark. Mat. 23, 241--259 (1985; Zbl 0584.42012)].
