      Let $\mathbb F_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. Let $G$ be one of the three groups GL($n, \mathbb F_q$) -- the general linear group, SL($n, \mathbb F_q$) -- the special linear group or U($n, \mathbb F_q$) -- the unipotent group of upper triangular matrices with 1's on the diagonal. Suppose $W$ is the standard representation of GL($n, \mathbb F_q$) and $W^*$ is the dual space of $W$. For non-negative integers $m$ and $d$ we let $mW \oplus dW^*$ denote the representation of $G$ given by the direct sum of $m$ vectors and $d$ covectors. In the present article is found explicitly a minimal set of homogeneous invariant polynomials $\{l_1, l_2,\dots , l_{(m+d)n}\}\subseteq \mathbb F_q[mW \oplus dW^*]^G$ such that $\mathbb F_q(mW \oplus dW^*)^G =\mathbb F_q(l_1, l_2, \dots, l_{(m+d)n})$ for all cases except possibly for the cases where $md = 0$ and $G$ = GL($n, \mathbb F_q$) or SL($n, \mathbb F_q$).
