The authors bound from below the visual dimension of geodesics which escape through ends of a noncompact orientable complete surface with pinched negative curvature: If the surface has finite area, then there are countably many; if the surface is transient, the escaping directions have full harmonic measure; if the surface is recurrent with finite area, the escaping directions have zero harmonic measure, but visual dimension at least 1.
