Let \(X\) be a sufficiently rich complete metric space (e.g., an Urysohn universal space, which contains an isometric copy of each compact metric space, or \(\mathbb{R}^d\) for some \(d\geqslant1\)); a continuous surjective map \(M\to M\) for a compact subset \(M\) of \(X\) is called here a dynamical system, and such a map is associated to its graph in \(M\times M\). Arbitrary compact subsets of \(M\times M\) are viewed here as `generalized' continuous functions. The Hausdorff metric on the space of all such generalized dynamical systems gives a metric space of dynamical systems. The main results are based on the assumption that \(X\) is a perfect Polish space. A central goal is to show that generically there is only one dynamical system modulo topological conjugacy. This unique system is called the `special homeomorphism': it is a homeomorphism of a Cantor space with conjugacy class residual in the space of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set with respect to uniform convergence. This genericity result is due to \textit{A. S. Kechris} and \textit{C. Rosendal} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 94, No. 2, 302--350 (2007; Zbl 1118.03042)]; later, in [\textit{E. Akin} et al., Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 360, No. 7, 3613--3630 (2008; Zbl 1144.22007)], an explicit construction has been given. Among the known properties of this system we mention zero topological entropy, pseudo-orbit tracing and non-expansiveness. Further questions about topologically universal spaces for dynamical systems and similar questions modulo isometric conjugacies are considered.
