Mathematical journals have recently become a subject of historical research in themselves. Projects like Cirmath (Circulations des mathématiques dans et par les journaux : histoire, territoires, publics) aim at a systematic study from a historical point of view of the circulation space of these journals, including the editors's policy, the authors, the readership, the institutions (learned and professional societies, academies, universities, etc.) and the various forms of practice, actors and interactions involved in it. The present paper offers an introduction to a special issue of Historia Mathematica devoted to this topic. The papers published in this issue originated from papers presented at the Cirmath conference (Circulating Mathematics via Journals: the Rise of Internationalization 1850--1920) that took place at Institut Mittag-Leffler in 2016.
