    The paper contains several improvements of the known results in this area. The two main results (among a number of other results not mentioned here) are as follows: Theorem 2.10. Let $(T,M)$ be a complete local Noetherian ring. Then $T$ is the completion of a noncatenary local domain $A$, if and only if the following conditions hold:\begin{itemize} \item[(i)] No integer of $T$ is a zero divisor, \item[(ii)] $M\notin\mathrm{Ass}T$, and \item[(iii)] There exists $P\in\mathrm{Min}T$ such that $1<\dim(T/P)<\dim T$. \end{itemize} Theorem 3.8. Let $(T,M)$ be a complete local Noetherian ring. Then $T$ is the completion of a noncatenary local UFD, if and only if the following conditions hold:\begin{itemize} \item[(i)] No integer of $T$ is a zero divisor, \item[(ii)] depth$T>1$, and \item[(iii)] There exists $P\in\mathrm{Min}T$ such that $2<\dim(T/P)<\dim T$.\end{itemize}
