Let \(f\colon B^n\to B^N\) be a holomorphic map between unit balls in complex Euclidean spaces. To \(f\) there are associated various groups, like \(A_f\), the subgroup of \(\mathrm{Aut}(B^n)\times \mathrm{Aut}(B^N)\) consisting of those pairs \((\gamma,\psi)\) such that \(f\circ\gamma=\psi\circ f\), its projection to the first factor \(\Gamma_f\) and its projection to the second factor \(T_f\). In this paper, various properties of \(f\) are related to properties of \(\Gamma_f\) and \(T_f\). For example, if \(\Gamma_f\) contains the center of \(\mathrm{U}(n)\), then \(f\) is spherically equivalent to a polynomial (i.e., there exist \(\gamma\in \mathrm{Aut}(B^n)\), \(\psi\in \mathrm{Aut}(B^n)\) and a polynomial \(g\) such that \(f\circ \gamma=\psi\circ g\)); if \(\Gamma_f\) contains the center of \(\mathrm{U}(n)\) and it is non-compact, then \(f\) is a linear fractional transformation. If \(f\) is proper, it is proved that \(\Gamma_f\) and \(T_f\) are Lie subgroups of \(\mathrm{Aut}(B^n)\) and \( \mathrm{Aut}(B^N)\) respectively, and that \(\Gamma_f\) is non-compact if and only if so is \(T_f\). For minimal holomorphic maps \(f\colon B^n\to B^N\) (i.e., such that the image lies in no lower-dimensional affine linear subspace) it is proved that there is a homomorphism \(\Phi\colon \Gamma_f\to T_f\) and that \(f\) is \(\Phi\)-equivariant. For minimal completely non-rational maps (i.e., such that the restriction to any positive-dimensional affine linear subspace of \(\mathbf{ C}^n\) is non-rational), it is proved that \(\Gamma_f\) and \(T_f\) are either both finite or both non-compact. Some of the results of this paper extend results obtained in a previous paper by the same authors [Adv. in Math., 313, 590--627 (2017; Zbl 1375.32034)] for rational maps.
