This article is a deep study of torsion classes in the cohomology of Shimura varieties of Kottwitz-Harris-Taylor (KHT) type. A conjecture [\textit{N. Bergeron} and \textit{A. Venkatesh}, J. Inst. Math. Jussieu 12, No. 2, 391--447 (2013; Zbl 1266.22013)] implies that such torsion classes are rare in a precise sense. Under certain technical conditions consistent with this conjecture the author shows the existence of torsion classes for Shimura varieties of KHT type associated to a group of similitudes \(G\). An infinite set of automorphic representations of \(G\) is attached to each such torsion class; these are shown to be pairwise nonisomorphic and weakly congruent.
