Ramification groups of coverings and valuations (Q1728138)

Jointly with \textit{A. Abbes}, the author [Am. J. Math. 124, No. 5, 879--920 (2002; Zbl 1084.11064)] investigated the filtration by ramification groups of the Galois group, coming from an extension of a complete discrete valuation field. To this purpose they used rigid geometry. Using the language of schemes, the present paper ``translates'' these results to Galois coverings. For a more detailed overview, the ``cognoscenti'' are invited to read the first 3 pages of the paper. \par In the first part the author presents preliminaries from scheme theory, mostly based on EGA IV and SGA, and adopted to his purposes. The second part deals with dilatations and complete intersections, as studied by \textit{A. Abbes} and the author [Tohoku Math. J. (2) 63, No. 4, Centen. Iss., 775--853 (2011; Zbl 1239.14012)]. The third and final part investigates ramification of quasifinite schemes and valuations, and culminates in Theorem 3.3.1 as the main result.
