For an analytic self-map \(\phi\) of the open unit disk \(\mathbb{D}\subset \mathbb{C}\) and a holomorphic function \(u\) on \(\mathbb{D}\), let \(u C_\phi\) be the weighted composition operator on the space of holomorphic functions on \(\mathbb{D}\) defined by \((u C_\phi)f(z)=u(z)f(\phi(z))\). In this paper the author characterizes bounded, compact or Schatten class weighted composition operators on analytic weighted Bergman spaces \(A^p(\omega)\) on \(\mathbb{D}\), where \(\omega=e^{-\varphi}\) satisfies: (1) \(\varphi:\mathbb{D}\to \mathbb{R}\) is a radial function such that \(\tau=(\Delta \varphi)^{-1/2}\) is bounded on \(\mathbb{D}\); (2) \(\tau(z)\searrow 0\) and \(\tau'(z)\to 0\) as \(|z|\to 1^-\); (3) either \(\tau(z)(1-|z|)^{-\delta}\) increases for some \(\delta>0\) or \(\tau'(z)\log \tau(z)\to 0\) when \(|z|\to 1^-\); (4) for any \(0<\delta<1\), \(\omega(1-\delta t)/\omega(1-t)\to 0\) as \(t\to 0^+\). A typical weight in this class is \(\omega(r)=(1-r)^\beta e^{-c(1-r)^{-\alpha}}\), \(\alpha,c>0\) and \(\beta\ge 0\). One of the main results of this paper states that the composition operator \(C_\phi\) is bounded on \(A^p(\omega)\), \( 0 < p < \infty\), if and only if \[ \limsup_{|z|\to 1^-} \frac{\omega(z)}{\omega(\phi(z))}<\infty. \] For the operator \(uC_\phi\), the main characterizations are given in terms of the \(\phi\)-Berezin transform of \(|u|^2\) defined by \[ B_\phi |u|^2(z)=\int_{\mathbb{D}} |k_z(\phi(w))|^2 |u(w)|^2\omega(w)dA(w), \] where \(k_z(w)\) denotes the normalized Bergman kernel for \(A^2(\omega)\). It is then shown that: 1) If \(u\) is an integrable function on \(\mathbb{D}\), then \(uC_\phi\) is bounded on \(A^2(\omega)\) if and only if \(B_\phi|u|^2\in L^\infty\). 2) \(uC_\phi\) is in the Schatten class \(S_p(A^2(\omega))\) if and only if \(B_\phi|u|^2\in L^{p/2}(\Delta\varphi dA)\). The paper also contains other characterizations in terms of Carleson measures for \(A^p(\omega)\).
