The authors work on compact manifolds with negatively curved Riemannian metrics. They ask when the set of lengths of primitive geodesics of such a metric has arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. They prove that the generic such metric does not have these progressions, while arithmetic locally symmetric spaces have. They prove that every such metric has ``almost arithmetic progressions''.
