The paper gathers results on regular incidence complexes, `generalizing regular convex polytopes, regular complex polytopes, various types of incidence geometries, and many other highly symmetric objects', in terms of the arising automorphism groups. A regular incidence complex is a ranked poset with a connectivity condition and a local property relaxing the diamond property of abstract polytopes. Their structure is intimately related with their automorphism group. The paper mainly follows earlier results by the author, in particular his thesis [Reguläre Inzidenzkomplexe. Dortmund: University of Dortmund (PhD Thesis) (1980)]. Several insights on distinguished generating subgroups are collected. This leads to a construction of regular complexes from generalized string C-groups. Furthermore, existence criteria for an extension of a regular complex are given. The last section leaves several open problems related to polytope complexes. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1400.52002].
