      Let \(\mathfrak{a}\) be an ideal in a commutative ring \(R\). For an \(R\)-module \(M\), consider the following two functors: \begin{itemize} \item[(1)] the small \(\mathfrak{a}\)-torsion \(\Gamma_a(M) = \{x\in M |\, \text{there exists}\, n\in N \, \text{such that}\, \mathfrak{a}^n \subseteq (0 :_R x)\}\), and \item[(2)] the large\(\mathfrak{a}\)-torsion \(\overline{\Gamma_a(M)} = \{x\in M |\mathfrak{a}\subseteq \sqrt{(0 :_R x)}\}\). \end{itemize} It is known that these two functors are coincided if \(R\) is Noetherian, but not in general. In the paper under review, the authors give some basic properties of as well as the relation between these two functors. In addition, they give several examples, showing that some well-known properties of torsion functors over Noetherian rings do not generalize to non-Noetherian rings.
