For a compact set \(K \subset \mathbb{R}^m\), \textit{H. Whitney} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 36, 63--89 (1934; Zbl 0008.24902)] discovered a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an extension \(F \in C^k (\mathbb{R}^m)\) of a continuous function \(f : K \to \mathbb{R}\). The author proves a version of the Whitney extension theorem in the case of \(C^1\) horizontal extensions for mappings from a compact subset of \(\mathbb{R}\) into the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group \(\mathbb{H}^n\), which generalizes the Whitney extension theorem given by Whitney [loc. cit.]. The paper contains useful informations on the Whitney extension theorem and is systematically well organized.
