The author gives an alternative proof of a theorem of \textit{M. Chas} [Geom. Dedicata 144, 25--60 (2010; Zbl 1186.57015)]: let \(S\) be an oriented surface of negative Euler characteristic, and \(\alpha\), \(\beta\) be two free homotopy classes of oriented closed curves on \(S\). If \(\alpha\) contains a simple closed curve, then the geometric intersection number between \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) is equal to the number of terms in the Goldman Lie bracket between \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\), counted with multiplicity. In order to do that, he proves the following theorem: for every hyperbolic structure on \(S\), if \(a\) and \(b\) are two oriented closed geodesics with intersection points \(p\) and \(q\) such that the product of the elements \(a_p\), \(b_p\) of \(\pi_1(S;p)\) corresponding to \(a\) and \(b\) is freely homotopic to the product of \(a_q\) and \(b_q\), then the angles between \(a\) and \(b\) at \(p\) and at \(q\) are the same.
