This paper contributes to our understanding of the relationship between injectivity and universal disposition in the category of Banach spaces. Here, \(X\) is said to be of \((\alpha,\beta)\) universal disposition if, given Banach spaces \(A\) and \(B\) with generating sets of cardinality strictly less than \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\), respectively, any linear isometry from \(A\) into \(X\) factors through any given isometry from \(A\) into \(B\). This generalizes the notion introduced by \textit{V. I. Gurarij} [Sib. Mat. Zh. 7, 1002--1013 (1966; Zbl 0166.39303)] in the case \(\alpha=\beta=\omega\). A Banach space \(X\) is said to be \((\alpha,\beta)_1\)-injective if, given Banach spaces \(A\) and \(B\) with generating sets of cardinality strictly less than \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\), respectively, and \(A\subset B\), then every operator from \(A\) to \(X\) admits a norm-preserving extension from \(B\) to \(X\). This unifies various notions of injectivity appearing in the literature. The main result is that a Banach space is \((\alpha,\beta)_1\)-injective if, and only if, it is 1-complemented in some Banach space of \((\alpha,\beta)\) universal disposition. It is noted that the same result is also valid for \(p\)-Banach spaces when \(p<1\).
