The authors investigate instances when constructions in group theory can be recognized from the von Neumann algebraic structure, by providing a class of amalgamated free product groups whose von Neumann algebra entirely remembers the amalgam structure of the former. Their results significantly strengthen early Bass-Serre rigidity results for von Neumann algebras. In particular, they obtain the first examples of amalgamated free product groups which are \(W^*\)-superrigid.
