This paper is devoted to the Fredholm integral equation of the first kind \[ Au(s)=\int\limits_{a}^{b}P(s,t)u(s)ds=f(t), \; c\leq t\leq d, \tag{1} \] where \(P(s,t),P_t'(s,t)\in C([a,b]\times[c,d])\), \(u(s)\in L_2[a,b]\), \(f(t)\in L_2[c,d]\), and the kernel \(P(s,t)\) of the operator \(A\) is closed. For the approximate solution of (1), the authors use the generalized discrepancy method. This method consists in reducing Equation (1) to some conditional extremum variational problem. The proposed regularization algorithm includes a finite-dimensional approximation of the integral equation in both variables. An error estimate for this algorithm is also obtained.
