In [Q. J. Math. 54, No. 3, 281--308 (2003; Zbl 1076.32019)], \textit{N. Hitchin} introduced the concept of a generalized complex structure on the generalized tangent bundle \(E=TM\oplus T^*M\). One of the purposes of this study is to complement the existing literature on generalized complex structures highlighting similarities and differences with Hitchin's theory. The author survey several results on this subject appearing in a series of her previous papers, with special attention to recent results on the generalized geometry of Norden and para Norden manifolds. The author studies complex structures \(\widehat{J}\) on the generalized tangent bundle \(E\) of a smooth manifold \(M\) compatible with the standard symplectic structure of \(E\). In particular, she describes the class of such generalized complex structures defined by a pseudo Riemannian metric \(g\) and a \(g\)-symmetric operator \(H\) such that \(H^2 = \mu I\), \(\mu \in \mathbb{R}\). These structures include the case of complex Norden manifolds for \(\mu =-1\) and the case of para Norden manifolds for \(\mu =-1\). Integrability conditions of \(\widehat{J}\) with respect to a linear connection \(\nabla\) are described and examples of geometric structures are given that naturally give rise to integrable generalized complex structures. The author defines the concept of generalized \(\overline{\partial}\)-operator of \((M, H, g, \nabla)\), and describes certain holomorphic sections. We recall some definitions. Let \((M,H)\) be an almost complex manifold and let \(g\) be a pseudo Riemannian metric on \(M\) such that \(H\) is a \(g\)-symmetric operator; \(g\) is called a Norden metric and \((M,H,g)\) is called Norden manifold. If \(H\) is integrable then \((M,H,g)\) is called a complex Norden manifold. Let \((M,H,g)\) be a Norden manifold and let \(\nabla\) be the Levi-Civita connection of \(g\). If \(\nabla H=0\) then \((M,H,g)\) is called a Kähler-Norden manifold. An almost paracomplex Norden manifold \((M,H,g)\) is a real \(2n\)-dimensional smooth manifold with a pseudo Riemannian metric \(g\) and a \((1,1)\) tensor field such that\(H^2=I\), the two eigenbundles, \(T^+M\), \(T^-M\), associated to the two eigenvalues have the same rank and \(H\) is a \(g\)-symmetric operator.
