    Given a projective variety \(X\subset {\mathbb P}^n\), let \(y \in {\mathbb P}^n\) be a general point and let \( k = \min \{ t |\exists P_1,\dots,P_t \in X,\;\) \(y \in < P_1,\dots,P_t > \}\). The scheme \(\mathrm{VPS}_X(y,k)\) which is the closure in \(\mathrm{Hilb}_k(X)\) of the set of smooth subschemes of \(X\) of length \(k\) whose span contains \(y\) is called ``the variety of subschemes apolar to \(y\)'' (a subscheme \(Z\subset X\) is called apolar to \( y \) if \( y\in < Z >\)). In this paper the notion of apolarity is generalized in the case of a toric surface \(X\) by using the fact that in this case the Cox ring \(\mathrm{Cox}(X)\) is a polynomial ring graded by \(\mathrm{Pic}(X)\). When \(X = {\mathbb P}^1\times {\mathbb P}^1\) and \(f\in S_A\), the dual of \(T_A\), where \(\mathrm{Cox}(X) = \bigoplus_{A\in \mathrm{Pic}(X)} T_A\), the following varieties are determined: \(\mathrm{VPS}_X([f],4)\) for \(A=(2,2)\) and \(\mathrm{VPS}_X([f],6)\) for \(A=(3,3)\). Moreover, also the case \(X=F_1\) (the blowup of \({\mathbb P}^2\) at a point) is studied and \(\mathrm{VPS}_{F_1}([f],8)\) is determined for \(A=3(E_0-E_1)\).
