The authors consider the inhomogeneous linear transport equation in a bounded Lipschitz domain in \(\mathbb R^d\), \(d\geq 1\), assuming rough initial data and its approximation by the implicit upwind finite volume scheme (which, in general, is not the corresponding difference scheme). The velocity is assumed to be a Sobolev vector field and, at the boundary, to be tangential. They follow the approach of \textit{R. J. DiPerna} and \textit{P. L. Lions} [Invent. Math. 98, No. 3, 511--547 (1989; Zbl 0696.34049)], for velocities in \(W^{1,p}\), finite right-hand sides, and with distributional results (densities) in \(L^q\) for every \(t\in(0,T)\). Continuing their earlier work for Cartesian meshes, see [\textit{A. Schlichting} and \textit{C. Seis}, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 55, No. 2, 812--840 (2017; Zbl 1365.65205)], now they consider regular tesselations into polyhedral control volumes covering the domain. For basic properties of the solution they refer to the work of \textit{R. Eymard} et al. [in: Handbook of numerical analysis. Vol. 7: Solution of equations in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) (Part 3). Techniques of scientific computing (Part 3). Amsterdam: North-Holland/ Elsevier. 713--1020 (2000; Zbl 0981.65095)], and prove in detail convergence of the solution in the sense of measures using for this aim the Kantorovitch-Rubinstein distance. In this sense, their outcome gives a convergence order of \(O(\sqrt{h}+\sqrt{\delta})\) for the spatial and time discretization parameters -- similar as in the classical paper of Kuznetsov.
