Let \(d\in\mathbb{N}\setminus\{1\}\). Besicovitch proved that a compact set \(K\subset\mathbb{R}^d\) containing a unit line segment in every direction (\textit{Besicovitch set}) can have Lebesgue measure zero. A natural task is to compute the Hausdorff dimension of such sets. It is one of the famous conjectures in geometric measure theory that Besicovitch sets of \(\mathbb{R}^d\) where \(d\geq3\), have full Hausdorff dimension. For \(d=2\) this is settled by \textit{R. O. Davies} [Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 69, 417--421 (1971; Zbl 0209.26602)]. This is the so called \textit{Kakeya conjecture} and the aim of this paper is to present several results in support of it. Let \(\dim_H,\dim_{LB},\dim_A\) and \(\dim_P\) stand for the Hausdorff, lower box-counting, Assouad and packing dimensions respectively. Let \(K\) be a Besicovitch set in \(\mathbb{R}^d\). The results presented include the following estimates \[ \dim_{LB}(K),\dim_P(K)\geq(d+1)/2 \quad\text{ and } \dim_{P}(K)+\dim_H(K)\geq d+1. \] Also, the Kakeya conjecture is true if one replaces \(\dim_H\) by the bigger dimension \(\dim_A\) and considers sets \(K\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d\) containing a half-infinite line in every direction (\textit{half-extended Besicovitch set}) instead.
