For \(X\) a smooth projective variety, a co-Higgs bundle on \(X\) is a pair \((\mathcal E,\Phi)\), where \(\mathcal{E}\) is a vector bundle on \(X\) and \(\Phi\in H^0(\mathrm{End}(\mathcal{E})\otimes T_X)\) with \(\Phi\wedge\Phi=0\) [\textit{M. Gualtieri}, Ann. Math. (2) 174, No. 1, 75--123 (2011; Zbl 1235.32020)]. In [\textit{M. CorrĂȘa}, Geom. Dedicata 183, 25--31 (2016; Zbl 1371.14016)] it was shown that for \(\dim X = 2\) the existence of semistable co-Higgs bundles of rank two with \(\Phi\) nilpotent implies that \(X\) is either uniruled, a torus, or a properly elliptic surface. A study of the moduli space of semistable co-Higgs bundles of rank two on Hirzebruch surfaces can be found in [\textit{A. V. Colmenares}, ``Moduli spaces of semistable rank-2 co Higgs bundles over \(\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1\)'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1604.01372}]. In the present paper, the authors show that with respect to any ample line bundle on a smooth projective variety with nonnegative Kodaira dimension a semistable co-Higgs implies that \(\mathcal{E}\) is also semistable. Furthermore, the authors study rank-two co-Higgs bundles on surfaces where the co-Higgs field \(\Phi\) is nilpotent.
