A matrix-free implementation of the conjugated-gradient method is described and applied to large algebraic systems arising when discretizing problems in continuum mechanics with implicit schemes. The proposed implementation implies reduced memory and increased computational efficiency.\par Moreover, the algorithm is robust and simple to implement. Examples are given in one, two and three space dimensions, for supersonic gas dynamics problems on moving adaptive grids discretized implicitly, the mechanics of a viscous incompressible fluids and the mechanics of solids.
