In the present article the authors study the existence of invariant almost complex structures on real flag manifolds associated to split real forms of complex simple Lie algebras. Even though the invariant geometry of complex flag manifolds has been extensively studied (since Borel) the invariant geometric structures of real flag manifolds have not been extensively studied. A flag manifold of a non-compact semisimple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) is a quotient space \(F_{\Theta} = G/P_\Theta\), where \(G\) is a connected group with Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) and \(P_\Theta\) is a parabolic subgroup. If \(K\subset G\) is a maximal compact subgroup and \(K_\Theta = K \cap P_\Theta\), then the flag \(F_\Theta\) can be written in the form \(F_\Theta = K/K_\Theta\). The authors study the existence and integrability of invariant almost complex structures on real flagmanifolds \(F_\Theta\) in the case that \(\mathfrak{g}\) is a split real form of a complex simple Lie algebra. They investigate which of the real flag manifolds \(F_\Theta\) admit \(K\)-invariant almost complex structures and then verify their integrability, that is, when they are indeed complex structures. They prove the following: {\parindent=0.7cm \begin{itemize}\item[1)] A real flag manifold \(F_\Theta = K/K_\Theta\) admits a \(K\)-invariant almost complex structure if and only if it is a maximal flag of type \(A_3\), \(B_2\), \(G_2\), \(C_l\) for \(l\) even or \(D_l\) for \(l \geq 4\), or if it is one of the intermediate flags \(B_3, C_l, D_4\). \item[2)] A real flag manifold \(F_\Theta = K/K_\Theta\) admits \(K\)-invariant complex structures if and only if it is of type \(C_l\). The proof uses results about the isotropy representation of real flag manifolds in [\textit{M. Patrão} and \textit{L. A. B. San Martin}, Indag. Math., New Ser. 26, No. 3, 547--579 (2015; Zbl 1360.22020)]. \end{itemize}}
