The paper is concerned with providing efficient and stable approximations of the Caputo fractional derivative of Müntz-Legendre polynomials. The approach is based on three-term recurrences and Gauss-Legendre quadrature rules. Following the initial sections where the basic ideas are introduced, the authors go on to present their proposed approximation schemes for computing the Caputo fractional derivative. They apply a collocation method to solve multi-order fractional differential equations and give a convergence analysis which improves on earlier results giving new rates of convergence for projection errors, and improved error estimates. The paper concludes with a discussion of applications of the method and some examples that demonstrate the efficiency and validity of the proposed schemes.
