Let \(G=\mathfrak S_n\) be the symmetric group of degree \(n\in\mathbb N\). If \(k\) is a field of characteristic 0, the Specht modules are precisely the irreducible \(kG\)-modules. If \(\text{char}(k)\) is odd, the Specht modules are all indecomposable, whereas if \(\text{char}(k)=2\), decomposable Specht modules are known to exist, though few explicit examples are known (those found by Murphy which are labelled by `hook partitions' of the form \((a,1^b)\) are well-known). If \(\text{char}(k)=2\) the authors find a new family of decomposable Specht modules, namely those labelled by partitions of the form \((x,3,1^y)\) where \(x\) and \(y\) are even. The paper contains a study of partitions of this form and, by considering explicit homomorphisms between Specht modules, they are able to show which irreducible Specht modules arise as summands of these Specht modules. Applying this result, they are able to determine which of their Specht modules have a summand isomorphic to an irreducible Specht module.
