This work proposes a definition of a mixed superposition rule that generalizes the concept of a superposition rule of Lie and Scheffers. The authors characterize systems admitting a mixed superposition rule as certain flat connections and prove a generalization of the Lie-Scheffers theorem. In addition, they show that mixed superposition rules are more versatile than the standard ones and may be used to analyze simultaneously the general solutions of different Lie systems. As an application, they study the Riccati hierarchy and retrieve some know results in a more efficient way.
