    Let \(\mathcal I\) and \(\mathcal J\) be symmetric quasi-Banach ideals of compact operators on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space \(H\). This paper studies properties of derivations \(\delta: \mathcal I \to \mathcal J\), that is, linear maps \(\delta\) satisfying \(\delta(xy) = \delta(x) y + x \delta(y)\) for all \(x,y \in \mathcal I\). Some results: (i) any derivation \(\delta: \mathcal I \to \mathcal J\) is bounded, (ii) for any derivation \(\delta: \mathcal I \to \mathcal J\), there is a bounded operator \(a \in B(H)\) such that \(\delta (x) = \delta_a(x)\) for all \(x \in \mathcal I\), where the inner derivation \(\delta_a\) is defined by \(\delta_a(x) = ax - xa\). In fact, one may choose \(a \in \mathcal J : \mathcal I\) and \(\alpha \in \mathbb C\) such that \(\| a + \alpha 1 \| _{B(H)} \leq \| \delta\| _{B(\mathcal I,\mathcal J)}\). Here, \(\mathcal J : \mathcal I = \{a \in B(H): ax \in \mathcal J\;\text{for all}\;x \in \mathcal I\}\) is the \(\mathcal J\)-dual space of \(\mathcal I\). The main result provides a full description (too technical to include here) of all derivations \(\delta: \mathcal I \to \mathcal J\) in the non-trivial case where \(\mathcal I\) is not contained in \(\mathcal J\). This description is based on the equality \(\mathcal J : \mathcal I = C_{E_{\mathcal J} : E_{\mathcal I}}\) and an extension, due to \textit{N. J. Kalton} and \textit{F. A. Sukochev} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 621, 81--121 (2008; Zbl 1152.47014)], of the Calkin correspondence between two-sided ideals of operators on Hilbert spaces and solid rearrangemant-invariant sequence spaces in \(c_0\) to the case of symmetric \(p\)-convex quasi-Banach ideals and symmetric \(p\)-convex quasi-normed sequence spaces in \(c_0\). Above, \(F : G = \{\xi \in \ell^\infty: \xi \nu \in F\;\text{for all}\;\nu \in G\}\) for solid rearrangemant-invariant sequence spaces \(F\) and \(G\) of \(c_0\) and \(C_F = \{x \in K(H): (s_n(x)) \in F\}\), where \((s_n(x))\) is the sequence of singular numbers of \(x\). The results complement earlier ones due to, e.g., \textit{M. J. Hoffman} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 30, 859--869 (1981; Zbl 0455.47029)].
