In this paper, the authors investigate \(\mathbb Z_2 \mathbb Z_4\)-additive self-dual codes. These additive codes over \(\mathbb Z_2 \times \mathbb Z_4\) (where \(\mathbb Z_2\) and \(\mathbb Z_4\) are the rings of integers modulo 2 and modulo 4) are subgroups of \(\mathbb Z_2^\alpha \times \mathbb Z_4^\beta\) in a binary Hamming scheme. Three types of such self-dual codes are defined (called Type 0, Type I, and Type II according to their weights). For each type, there is a classification of codes based on the allowable values of \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) and a construction method for each type and possible pair \((\alpha, \beta)\) is given. Moreover, the authors give a construction of new self-dual codes from existing self-dual codes.
